The Raiders signed quarterback Garrett Gilbert to their practice squad, the team announced Jan. 3, 2017.
Gilbert, 25, could be activated to the 53-player roster if Matt McGloin is unavailable for Oakland's Wild Card playoff game at Houston on Jan. 7 because of a shoulder injury.
Gilbert was a member of the Raiders' practice squad from September 2015 to May 2016. He has a Super Bowl ring from his time with the New England Patriots from 2014 to 2015 after being a sixth round pick of the Rams in the 2014 draft.
The National Football League has decided not to reinstate Raiders linebacker Aldon Smith for the remainder of the 2016 season, the league announced Dec. 30, 2016. Instead, his case will be revisted on March 15, 2017, the NFL said. Smith, 27, was suspended from the NFL in November 2015 for violating the league's rules on substance abuse, with the ability to be reinstated after one year. His yearlong suspension was due to end Nov. 17, and he applied for reinstatement Oct. 3.
Smith’s one-year suspension stemmed from an arrest on charges of DUI, hit-and-run and vandalism. He was released by the San Francisco 49ers and signed by the Raiders, contributing 28 tackles and 3.5 sacks in nine games for Oakland and signing a two-year contract in April.
Smith reportedly has had five run-ins with the law since being drafted No. 7 overall in 2011 by the 49ers. The former Missouri star has played in 27 of a possible 63 games since 2013 due to his off-the-field problems.
Defensive end Mario Edwards Jr. activated from the Injured/Reserve —
Designated for Return List, the Raiders announced Dec. 23, 2016. To make room for Edwards on the 53-player roster, Oakland placed linebacker Shilique Calhoun on the Reserve/Injured List.
Edwards, 22, was placed on injured reserve on Sept. 5 after sustaining a hip injury in Oakland's exhibition opener Aug. 12. As a rookie in 2015, Edwards started 10 of 14 games and contributed 2.0 sacks and 33 solo tackles with nine assists.
Calhoun, a 2016 third-round draft pick, missed the past four games after reportedly undergoing a minor knee procedure following an injury sustained Nov. 21 against Houston. The rookie from Michigan State contributed eight solo tackles and one-half sack in 10 games, with no starts.
Defensive lineman Branden Jackson is signed off the Oakland practice squad and cornerback DJ Hayden is placed on season-ending Reserve/Injured list because of a hamstring injury, the Raiders announced Dec. 3, 2016.
Raiders coach Jack Del Rio announced on Dec. 2, 2016 that slot cornerback DJ Hayden will be placed on season-ending injured reserve because of a "substantial hamstring" injury. "That was a big blow," Del Rio told reporters. "It is unfortunate. He was playing well for us."
Hayden, 26, was injured during the fourth quarter of Oakland's 35-32 win over Carolina on Nov. 27. He
contributed 37 total tackles, a forced fumble and six passes defensed in 11 games this season with two starts.
Hayden likely will be replaced by TJ Carrie, who has seen action at safety and corner, or rookie Antonio Hamilton. Carrie was beaten by Carolina's Ted Ginn Jr. on an 88-yard touchdown catch during the third quarter against Oakland.
Defensive tackle Demetrius Cherry signed to the Oakland practice squad, the Raiders announced Dec. 1, 2016. Cherry, 24, was released from the Raiders practice squad Oct. 4.
Tight end Ryan O'Malley signed to the Oakland practice squad, the Raiders announced Nov. 29, 2016. O'Malley, 23, was waived from the active roster Nov. 26.
Linebacker Tyrell Adams and linebacker/defensive end James Cowser signed off the Oakland practice squad, the Raiders announced Nov. 26, 2016. The team also released offensive tackle Matt McCants and waived tight end Ryan O'Malley.
Offensive tackle Tacoby Cofield placed on Practice Squad/Injured list and guard Ian Silberman signed to the practice squad, the Raiders announced Oct. 21, 2016.
Former Seattle Seahawks tight end Cooper Helfet signed to the Raiders practice squad, the team announced Oct. 12, 2016. To make room for Helfet, linebacker Darnell Sankey was releaesd from the 10-player practice squad.
Helfet, 27, is a former undrafted free agent out of Duke who spent the 2012 to 2015 seasons with Seattle. He has played in 23 games with four starts over the past two seasons, contributing 25 catches for 315 yards and two touchdowns.
Starting tight end Lee Smith placed on Reserve/Injured List because of a lower leg injury and tight end Ryan O'Malley signed off of Oakland's practice squad, the Raiders announced Oct. 5, 2016. The team also announced two other — linebackers Tyrell Adams and Darnell Sankey signed to the practice squad.
Smith, 28, reportedly suffered a broken bone in his lower right leg after catching a short pass from Derek Carr during the second quarter of Oakland's 28-27 win over Baltimore on Oct. 2. O'Malley, 23, is an undrafted fre agent from Penn.
Former Washington Redskins linebacker Perry Riley signed and linebacker Ben Heeney placed on Reserve/Injured List, the Raiders announced Oct. 4, 2016. The team also announced three other moves — defensive lineman Demetrius Cherry and linebacker Darnell Sankey released from the practice squad and linebacker James Cowser signed to the practice squad.
Riley, 28, started 63 of 79 games for the Redskins from 2010 to 2015 and contributed 9.5 sacks and 445 total tackles. He was released during Washington's 2016 training camp. Riley could get playing time in place of Heeney, who suffered an ankle injury against Baltimore on Oct. 2.
Guard Denver Kirkland signed off Oakland's practice squad and linebacker Darnell Sankey signed to the practice squad, the Raiders announced Sept. 28, 2016. Kirkland, 22, adds depth to Oakland's offensive line with Menelik Watson and Austin Howard battling injuries. Sankey, 21, spent time with the Denver Broncos during their 2016 training camp before being released.
Linebacker Korey Toomer's practice squad contract terminated and defensive tackle Demetrius Cherry signed to the practice squad, the Raiders announced Sept. 27, 2016. Toomer, who played in 10 games for the Raiders during the 2015 season, was signed by San Diego on Sept. 28.
Fullback Marcel Reece released, the Raiders announced Sept. 26, 2016. decision.
Reece, left, was selected to the Pro Bowl four times during his eight seasons with the Raiders. He was suspended for Oakland's 2015 finale and the first three games of this season for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances, the league announced Dec. 28 of last year.
Reece, 31, was eligible to return to the team the day he was released.
Reece started 67 of 92 games he played in with the Raiders. He contributed 844 rushing yards on 183 carries and three touchdowns and had 205 receptions for 2,015 yards and 12 scores.
"What he has meant to the organization and to me over the past few years is hard to put into words, but his actions, both on and off the field, speak louder than any words can," Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie said in a statement released by the team. "This was a tough decision. Not enough can be said about Marcel’s commitment to his teammates and his pride in the Raiders, and we wish him and his family nothing but the best.”.
In 2015, Reece had career lows in rushing yards (36) and carries (10) and he added 30 catches for 269 yards.
His best season was in 2012 when he had 52 catches for 496 yards and 271 rushing yards on 59 carries.
The Raiders signed fullback Jamize Olawale to a three-year, $6 million extension last December in a move that reportedly helped make Reece expendable.
Defensive end Jimmy Bean signed to the Raiders practice squad and linebacker Curtis Grant is released from the practice squad, the team announced Sept. 14, 2016.
Offensive tackle Takoby Cofield signed to the practice squad and linebacker Jason Fanakia released from the practice squad, the Raiders announced Sept. 13, 2016.
Oakland has a shortage of healthy offensive linemen after starting right tackle Menelik Watson and backup Matt McCants sustained injuries against New Orleans on Sept. 11. Cofield, 24, spent last season on the Washington Redskins practice squad but was waived in the final round of cuts.
Defensive end/linebacker James Cowser waived from Reserve/Injured, the Raiders announced Sept. 10, 2016.
Defensive end Mario Edwards Jr. placed on injured reserve, the Raiders announced Sept. 5, 2016. He sustained a hip injury during Oakland's 2016 exhibition opener on Aug. 12 after missing the final two games of last season because of a neck injury.
Edwards, 22, reportedly is expected to be given the return designation because he was on the team's original 53-player roster before going on the injured list.
Under a new rule this season, teams cannot give players a return designation until they have been on injured reserve for six weeks. In addition, a player must be on IR for eight weeks before he can be activated.
Edwards is eligible to be activated in Week 9, when the Raiders host Denver on Nov. 6.
As a rookie in 2015, Edwards started 10 of 14 games and contributed 2.0 sacks and 33 solo tackles with nine assists.
Defensive end/linebacker Jason Fanaika and linebacker Curtis Grant signed to the team's practice squad, the Raiders announced Sept. 5, 2016.
The Raiders on Sept. 4, 2016, announced the following players were signed to the team's practice squad: wide receivers K.J. Brent and Jaydon Mickens, cornerback Kenneth Durden, defensive linrman Branden Jackson, guards Denver Kirkland and Oni Omoile, linebacker Korey Toomer and tight end Ryan O'Malley. All seven spent time with the team during training camp.
Running back George Atkinson III and cornerback Neiko Thorpe are among 18 players waived by the Raiders, the team announced Sept. 3, 2016.

Defensive lineman Leon Orr and wide receiver Max McCaffrey are among 14 players waived by the Raiders, the team announced Aug. 29, 2016. Tight end Gabe Holmes was placed on season-ending injured reserve because of an ankle injury as Oakland reducded its roster to the league-mandated limit of 75 players.
The Raiders also waived center Ross Burbank, long snapper Andrew East, safeties Chris Edwards, Chris Hackett and Jimmy Hall, wide receivers Joe Hansley and Nathan Palmer, defensivde back Tramain Jacobs, linebacker Lenny Jones, kicker Giorgio Tavecchio, tight end Colton Underwood and guard/center Terran Vaughn.
Orr, 24, spent most of the 2015 season on Oakland's practice squad before being active for three games. The former Florida player reportedly had fallen behind rookie Darius Latham on the depth chart. McCaffrey, 22, is the son of former Broncos wide receiver Ed McCaffrey and brother of Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey.
Tight end Jake McGee signed, the Raiders announced Aug. 16, 2016. McGee, 24, had a career-best 112 receptions for 1,150 yards and 11 TDs during his senior year at Florida in 2015. He went undrafted because he reportedly lacks athleticism and big-play catching ability.
Offensive lineman Torian White waived, the Raiders announced Aug. 15, 2016. White, 23, reportedly signed a three-year, $1.62 million contract in May.
Tight end Gabe Holmes expected to go on injured reserve, coach Jack Del Rio told reporters Aug. 15, 2016. Holmes, 25, reportedly sustained a high-ankle sprain and broke a small bone in the ankle during Oakland's 31-10 win over Arizona on Aug. 12. The former Purdue player spent most of the 2015 season on Oakland's practice squad.
Defensive back Tramain Jacobs (New York Giants) and linebacker Lenny Jones (San Francisco 49ers) claimed off waivers, the Raiders announced Aug. 5, 2016. Oakland also waived/injured cornerback SaQwan Edwards and waived defensive end Damontre Moore.
Running back Roy Helu Jr. released, the Raiders announced Aug. 2, 2016. The former Washington Redskins player was placed on season-ending injured reserve July 29. Helu, 27, rushed for 39 yards on 17 carries and caught nine passes for 75 yards and a TD in a limited role with Oakland last season. He reportedly underwent surgery on both of this hips in February.
General Manager Reggie McKenzie signs a four-year contract extension, the Raiders announced July 29, 2016. His new deal runs through the 2021 NFL Draft. The Raiders are 18-46 in McKenzie's four seasons, but the team went 7-9 in 2015 and the past three drafts have produced a strong nucleus led by defensive end Khalil Mack, quarterback Derek Carr and wide receiver Amari Cooper.
Defensive lineman Denico Autry placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list, running back Roy Helu Jr. placed on Injured Reserve and defensive lineman Derrick Lott signed, the Raiders announced April 29, 2016. The team also announced that guard Vadal Alexander had passed his physical and no longer was designated on the Non-Football Injury list.

Cornerback David Amerson agrees to a four-year contract extension with the Raiders according to published reports July 15, 2016. His new deal is worth $38 million with $18 million guaranteed, according to the NFL Network.
Amerson, 24, was claimed off waivers from Washington last September, and his rookie contract was scheduled to expire after the 2016 season. He was owed only $880,000 in the final year of his contract.
In his first season with the Raiders, Amerson contributed four interceptions and
a franchise-record 26 passes defensed in 14 games with 12 starts. The Redskins waived Amerson after three games last season.
At 6-foot-1, 205-pounds, Amerson is difficult to throw against because of his quick feet and long arms. In 2015, he finished with 60 tackles, the aforementioned four picks and a forced fumble. Opposing passers completed only 66.3 percent of their passes against the Amerson, selected in the secondd round of the 2014 draft.
With the signing of Amerson and former Kansas City Chiefs star Sean Smith to four-year deals, the Raiders reportedly have committed nearly $80 million to their projected starting cornerbacks.
Former Michigan State defensive end Shilique Calhoun signed, the Raiders announced June 17, 2016. He was selected by Oakland during the third round (75th overall) of this year's draft. Calhoun reportedly signed a four-year contract worth $3,130,136, which includes a $790,136 signing bonus.
Wide receiver Marvin Hall signed, the Raiders announced June 6, 2016. He had 25 catches for 409 yards and a TD during his four seasons at Washintgon. He also was used in the return game, returning 16 kickoffs for 357 yards (22.3 yards per return) as a freshman and returning 12 punts for 105 yards for his college career.
Wide receiver Andre Debose waived, the Raiders announced June 3, 2016.
Wide receiver Robert Herron waived, the Raiders announced May, 26, 2016.
Wide receiver Andre Debose placed on Injured Reserve, the Raiders announced May 25, 2016. DeBose, 25, spent the 2015 season on IR after tearing his Achilles last June during Organized Team Activities. The Raiders did not disclose the nature of his latest injury. The former Florida player was selected by Oakland during the seventh round of the 2015 draft.
Quarterback Garrett Gilbert and wide receiver Andre DeBose (injured) waived, the Raiders announced May 24, 2014. The team also signed wide receivers Robert Herron and Nathan Palmer.
Former Colorado State linebacker Cory James signed, the Raiders announced May 20, 2016. James, 22, was selected by Oakland during the sixth round (194th overall choice) of this year's draft.
He reportedly signed a four-year contract.
James had 24 sacks and 41 tackles for loss in 51 games at Colorado State, but he will need to earn a role on special teams to make Oakland's regular-season roster.
Former Illinois defensive lineman Jihad Ward signed, the Raiders announced May 18, 2016. Ward, 22, was selected by Oakland during the second round (44th overall pick) of this year's draft.
He reportedly signed a four-year contract, and is slotted to earn $5,539,798 over the life of the deal, including a $2,222,944 signing bonus.
In two seasons at Illinois, Ward started all 25 games and contributed 104 combined tackles, 4.5 sacks, three passes defensed, three forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries.
The Raiders on May 16, 2016 announced the signing of defensive back Chris Edwards, wide receiver Joe Hansley, defensive lineman Branden Jackson, running back Jalen Richard and offensive lineman Torian White.
Oakland waived defensive end Shelby Harris, safety Tevin McDonald and cornerback Tony McRae. Harris, 24, was a seventh round pick by the Raiders during the 2014 NFL draft. The former Illinois State player saw action in eight games over two seasons with no starts and contributed 14 total tackles and a sack.

Former USC defensive end Greg Townsend Jr. signed, the Raiders announced May 11, 2016. Townsend’s father played for the Los Angeles Raiders from 1983-1993 and again in Oakland in 1997 and is the franchise’s all-time sacks leader with 107.5. The younger Townsend, 23, contributed 6.5 sacks and 68 tackles in 33 career games, including 15 starts, for the Trojans.
Wide receiver Max McCaffrey, the son of former Stanford and Denver Broncos great Ed McCaffrey, is among 13 undrafted free agents signed, the Raiders announced May 10, 2016.
Also signed by Oakland are wide receivers K.J. Brent and Johnny Holton, center Ross Burbank, linebacker/defensive end James Coswer, defensive backs Kenneth Durden, Antonio Hamilton and Tony McRae, defensive lineman Drew Iddings, defensive tackle Darius Latham, tight end Ryan O'Malley, guard Oni Omoile and linebacker Kyrie Wilson.
The Raiders also announced the signing of fifth-round pick DeAndre Washington, who rushed for more than 2,500 yards over his final two seasons at Texas Tech.
Top draft pick Karl Joseph signed, the Raiders announced May 9, 2016. Joseph, 22, starred at safety for West Virginia before being chosen by Oakland with the 14th overall choice in the 2016 draft. He received a four-year deal with a fifth-year option, which is standard for first round contracts. His contract reportedly is worth $11.88 million, which averages to $2.97 million per season.
The Raiders also announced the signings of former Michigan State quarterback Connor Cook (fourth round) and guard Vidal Alexander (seventh round).
Former New York Giants and Miami Dolphins defensive end Damontre Moore signed, the Raiders announced March 9, 2016. Moore, 23, has 45 tackles, 9.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery in a three-year NFL career as an edge pass rusher.
Moore was a third-round pick of the New York Giants in 2013, but reportedly he had issues with teammates. He was involved in multiple altercations with teammates, and was waived in December 2015 for violating team rules following an incident with veteran Cullen Jenkins over headphones. Moore played just three games after being claimed by the Dolphins. The former Texas A&M star was released by Miami on May 2.
Former Bengals and Jaguars safety Reggie Nelson signed, the Raiders announced April 7, 2016. He reportedly received a two-year deal. Nelson, 32, will replace Charles Woodson, who retired after the 2015 season. Nelson tied for the NFL lead with eight interceptions last season for Cincinnati. He has 30 career interceptions ind 138 games (125 starts).
Long snapper Andrew East signed, the Raiders announced April 5, 2016.
The Raiders announced on March 22, 2016, that they did not exercise their First Refusal Rights on restricted free agent defensive end Benson Mayowa.
Left tackle Donald Penn re-signed, the Raiders announced March 17, 2016. He reportedly received a two-year, $14 million deal from Oakland. Penn, 33, has started 32 consecutive games with the Raiders since signing on March 18, 2014. The 11-year veteran has started 140 of 144 games with Tampa Bay and Oakland.
Former Baltimore Ravens special teams standout Brynden Trawick signed a one-year contract, the Raiders announced March 16, 2016. Trawick, listed on the Raiders roster as a safety, reportedly had 10 tackles covering kicks for the Ravens during the 2015 season.
Wide receiver Andre Holmes re-signed, the Raiders announced March 15, 2016. He reportedly received a one-year deal with $1 million guaranteed with a maximum worth of $3 million. Holmes, 27, contributed 14 catches and four touchdowns in 16 games last season. The five-year veteran played only 335 snaps on offense during thde 2015 season.
Former Raiders guard/center Tony Bergstrom signed with the Houston Texans, the Texans announced March 15, 2016. He reportedly received a two-year, $5.75 deal. Bergstrom, 29, was the 95th overall pick (third round) in the 2012 NFL draft. The former Utah star was the first draft pick of Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie. Bergstrom started four of 25 games with the Raiders.
Former Rams linebacker Daren Bates signed a one-year contract, the Raiders announced March 14, 2016. Bates, who turns 26 in November, was a standout on special teams for the Rams during the past three seasons but contributed infrequently on defense. He had only 21 solo tackles and two fumble recoveries with the Rams.
Linebacker Curtis Lofton released, the Raiders announced March 11, 2016. He had only 45 solo tackles and a sack while starting nine of 16 games with Oakland last season. Lofton signed a three-year, $18 million deal with the Raiders on March 11, 2015.
Former Kansas City cornerback Sean Smith signed a four-year, $40 million contract, the Raiders announced March 10, 2016. The deal reportedly includes $20 million guaranteed. Smith, 28, contributed two interceptions and 45 total tackles with the rival Chiefs last season. The tandem of Smith (6-foot-4) and David Amerson (6-foot-1) give Oakland two starting cornerbacks with outstanding physical skills.
Former Seahawks linebacker Bruce Irvin signed a four-year, $37 million contract, the Raiders announced March 10, 2016. Irvin, 28, contributed 21.5 sacks in four seasons with Seattle. The former West Virginia star is expected to get more chances to rush the passer playing with fellow edge pass rusher Khalil Mack.
Former Ravens offensive lineman Kelechi Osemele signed, the Raiders announced March 10, 2016. He reportedly received a five-year, $58.5 million deal, and another $1.5 million is available through incentives each year of the contract. Osemele, 26, is a powerful blocker who can play guard or tackle. He is expected to start at right guard for Oakland.
Saftey Nate Allen re-signed, the Raiders announced Feb. 9, 2016. Allen, 28, reportedly received a one-year deal with $1.85 million guaranted and he can earn $2 million more through incentives.
Saftey Nate Allen released, the Raiders announced Feb. 9, 2016. Knee issues limited Allen to only five games with Oakland during the 2015 season. The former Eagles' starter finished with an interception, two passes defensed and 11 total tackles.
Raiders defensive end Justin Tuck announced his retirement, according to published reports Feb. 1, 2016. Tuck, 32, helped lead the New York Giants to two Super Bowl titles and finished with 66.5 career sacks. He spent the past two seasons with the Raiders, contributing six sacks in 20 games as a torn pectoral sidelined him for most of 2015. Tuck recorded four 10-sack seasons during his nine years with the Giants.
Kicker Giorgio Tavecchio and Garrett Gilbert signed to Reserve/Future contracts, the Raiders announced Jan. 5, 2016.
