Raiders 38, Seahawks 14

FLASH RECAP:
Rich Gannon throws for three touchdowns and rushes for another to lead Oakland over Seattle before an announced crowd of 54,629 at Network Associates Coliseum on Sept. 30, 2001. Gannon has touchdown passes of 33 and 14 yards to Jerry Rice in the first half as the Raiders (2-1) build a 24-0 advantage. Gannon scores on a 5-yard run and throws a 3-yard touchdown pass to Tyrone Wheatley in the third quarter. Shaun Alexander has a 4-yard scoring run for Seattle, ending the Seahawks' 10-quarter touchdown drought. Seattle (1-2) has three turnovers and allows seven sacks in losing its fourth straight game at Oakland. With 91 receiving yards, Rice joins Walter Payton as the only players in NFL history with 20,000 combined yards. Rice has 20,063 yards and Payton 21,803. Oakland defensive end Trace Armstrong suffers a ruptured Achilles' tendon in the fourth quarter and will miss the rest of the season.

PRIME-TIME PLAYERS:

Oakland
WR Jerry Rice -- The former 49ers' great has five catches for 91 yards and two touchowns. Rice celebrates his first touchdown (a 33-yard pass from Rich Gannon) as a Raider by leaping into the first row of stands in the south end zone, known as the Black Hole. Rice tells reporters afterward: "I think I've moved on to a new chapter in my life."
QB Rich Gannon -- Completes 19 of 28 passes for 217 yards and three touchdowns (with no interceptions). Throws 33- and 14-yard touchdown passes to Jerry Rice and a 3-yard scoring pass to Tyrone Wheatley. Gannon also has a 5-yard touchdown run on a quarterback draw.
CB Charles Woodson -- Contributes two sacks and six solo tackles.
C Adam Treu -- Makes his first NFL career start because of a season-ending knee injury to Barret Robbins the week before. Treu doesn't have any fumbles on center snaps or penalties.
DT Chris Cooper -- "Little Howie" becomes the first player from Nebraska-Omaha to make an interception in the NFL.
Seattle
WR Darrell Jackson -- Has five receptions for 125 yards. Sets up Seattle's first touchdown of the season by catching a 54-yard pass from Trent Dilfer.
TE Christian Fauria -- Catches a 3-yard touchdown pass from Brock Huard.
DT John Randle -- Has Seattle's only sack (Randle's 116 career sacks is best in the NFL since 1991).
LB Isaiah Kacyvenski -- Contributes three solo tackles on special teams a week after suffering a concussion against Philadelphia.

CHEAP SHOT OF THE WEEK:
Oakland OLB Elijah Alexander is flagged for a 15-yard roughing-the-passer penalty and ejected for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Seattle's Trent Dilfer in the third quarter. Alexander drills Dilfer as the Seattle quarterback releases a pass to Darrell Jackson for a 54-yard completion. A woozy Dilfer needs to be helped to the sideline after suffering a concussion.

TURNING POINT:
Oakland scores 17 unanswered points in the second quarter for a 24-0 lead. Sebastian Janikowski kicks a 20-yard field goal, Eric Allen returns a Shaun Alexander fumble 26 yards for a touchdown and Rich Gannon throws a 14-yard scoring pass to Jerry Rice.

KEY DRIVE:
The Raiders move 57 yards in five plays for a touchdown to build a 24-0 advantage. Rich Gannon is 4-for-4 passing for 57 yards. The Oakland quarterback throws a 14-yard touchdown pass to Jerry Rice with 1:57 left in the first half.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • 0: Touchdowns generated by QB Matt Hasselbeck in Seattle's first three games this season.
  • 2: Touchdown catches by Oakland's Jerry Rice.
  • 5: Offside penalties on Oakland's defensive line.
  • 8: Consecutive field goals by the Raiders' Sebastian Janikowski.
  • 19: Sacks allowed by Seattle after three games.

THEY SAID IT:
"We've had a bad string of injuries that have really put us behind the 8-ball. We'll keep pushing forward, but it stings."

Raiders QB Rich Gannon

"We are young, and we have a long ways to go. They really got to us."

Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren
