Raiders 28, Cowboys 21

FLASH RECAP:
Tyrone Wheatley rushes for two touchdowns and Rich Gannon throws for 209 yards as Oakland holds off Dallas before an announced crowd of 61,535 at Network Associates Coliseum on Oct. 7, 2001. The Raiders (3-1) build a 28-7 lead on three rushing touchdowns and a 5-yard scoring pass from Rich Gannon to Jerry Rice. The Cowboys (0-4) rally in the second half on touchdowns by Tom Seder and Darrin Chiaverini. Seder, a second-year kicker from Ashland University (Ohio), scores on an 8-yard run on a fake field goal attempt. Chiaverini catches a 3-yard touchdown pass from Anthony Wright on fourth-and-goal with 1:21 remaining. The Cowboys equal their worst start since 1989, when they went 1-15. The Raiders win for the 11th time in the past 12 home games despite losing fumbles by David Dunn and Rich Gannon.

PRIME-TIME PLAYERS:

Oakland
Raiders defense -- Holds the Cowboys scoreless on four drives inside the Raiders' 17-yard line. Oakland blocks two field goals (34 & 41 yards) in the second quarter, and then stops Dallas on two fourth-and-one plays (at the 12 and 7) in the fourth quarter.
QB Rich Gannon -- Completes 21 of 28 passes for 209 yards and one touchdown. Hits 10 of 12 passes for 137 yards as Oakland scores touchdowns on its first three drives.
WR Tim Brown -- Has seven receptions for 114 yards.
DT Grady Jackson -- Tackles Dallas QB Anthony Wright for no gain on fourth-and-one from Oakland 12 in the fourth quarter. Despite playing with a sore right shoulder, Jackson contributes a team-high seven solo tackles.
William Thomas & Regan Upshaw -- They each block a Tom Seder field goal attempt in the second quarter.
Dallas
WR Joey Galloway -- Burns Oakland Pro Bowl CB Charles Woodson for a 40-yard touchdown catch early in the second quarter. Galloway also draws a 20-yard pass interference penalty on Woodson to the Oakland nine on Dallas' third touchdown drive.
PK Tom Seder -- Scores on an 8-yard run on a fake field goal attempt with 42 seconds left in the third quarter.
QB Anthony Wright -- Dallas backup completes 14 of 22 passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns. He enters the game with a woeful 40.8 quarterback rating (15th NFC).
WR Ken-Yon Rambo -- Former Raiders 2001 draft choice (seventh round) makes his first NFL reception, an 8-yard catch on fourth-and-one to the Raiders' 16 during the fourth quarter.

GOAT OF THE GAME:
Oakland CB Charles Woodson -- On his 25th birthday, the three-time Pro Bowler has the worst game of his NFL career. Woodson allows Dallas' Joey Galloway to run past him for a 40-yard touchdown catch, commits a holding penalty on fourth down that leads to the Cowboys' second touchdown and commits a 20-yard pass interference penalty on Dallas' third touchdown drive.

TURNING POINT:
Oakland scores touchdowns on its first three possessions to build a 21-7 advantage.

KEY DRIVE:
The Raiders move 72 yards in 18 plays for their fourth touchdown, controling the ball for the first 9:49 of the third quarter. Rich Gannon completes first-down passes of four, five and 10 yards to Jerry Rice. Tyrone Wheatley's 1-yard scoring run gives Oakland a seemingly insurmountable 28-7 advantage.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • 2: Blocked field goals by Oakland.
  • 3: Rushing touchdowns by the Raiders, tripling their output for the season.
  • 7: Receptions each by Oakland's Tim Brown and Jerry Rice.
  • 5: Rushing yards by the Cowboys' Emmitt Smith on 16 carries.
  • 162: Kick return yards by Dallas' Reggie Swinton.

THEY SAID IT:
"This is the type of day that is going to stay with me the rest of my life. It's my birthday, I gave up a touchdown and we bombed Afhanistan."

Raiders CB Charles Woodson

"You have to do certain things to win games, but we keep making mistakes. We have to keep a positive attitude, if we can."

Cowboys RB Emmitt Smith

DID YOU KNOW?:
Oakland's Jerry Rice scores his 190th career touchdown and breaks the 1,300 plateau in career receptions, both on-going NFL records. Rice has seven receptions against Dallas, including a 5-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter.
