Cowboys 21, Raiders 6

FLASH RECAP:
Starting his second NFL game, rookie quarterback Quincy Carter engineers two first-half touchdown drives to lead Dallas (1-3) past Oakland (2-2) before an announced crowd of 88,309 at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City on Aug. 27, 2001. Carter, a second-round draft pick from Georgia, scores on a 16-yard run to erase a 3-0 Dallas deficit early in the second quarter. Carter's passing sets up a 4-yard touchdown run by Troy Hambrick as the Cowboys build a 14-3 advantage with 2:36 left in the second quarter. Backup quarterback Anthony Wright scores on a 4-yard run in the third quarter to help Dallas end a nine-game exhibition losing streak. The Raiders' Sebastian Janikowski kicks field goals of 32 and 38 yards, but he misses a 39-yard attempt. Oakland has two turnovers, five sacks and nine penalties.

PRIME-TIME PLAYERS:

Dallas
QB Quincy Carter -- Completes 6 of 11 passes for 99 yards. His 16-yard run is the first of three Dallas touchdowns.
FS George Teague -- Sets up the Cowboys' first touchdown by returning a Bobby Hoying interception eighth yards to the Oakland 27.
RB Troy Hambrick -- Rushes for a game-high 43 yards on nine carries. His 4-yard touchdown run gives Dallas a 14-3 advantage late in the first half.
DT Dimitirus Underwood -- Has two of the Cowboys' five sacks.
FS Sean Key -- Breaks up a touchdown pass from QB Marques Tuiasosopo to TE Andrew Glover in the fourth quarter. Glover holds the football in the end zone momentarily, but loses it after absorbing a hit from Key.

Oakland
WR Marcus Knight -- Robbed of his first NFL touchdown when the officials rule he doesn't have possession of a 24-yard pass from Bobby Hoying with 34 seconds left before halftime. Knight leaps high to make the catch and falls to the turf across the goal line holding the football. The ABC-TV replay shows Knight doesn't lose possession, but the officials rule an incomplete pass. The Raiders couldn't challenge the call because instant replay isn't used for neutral site games. Knight finishes with two catches for 32 yards.
RB Terry Kirby -- Has a game-high four catches for 32 yards. He also has a team-high 24 yards rushing on five carries.

QB Bobby Hoying -- His interception energizes the Cowboys, but he completes 16 of 21 passes for 136 yards.

TURNING POINT:
Dallas FS George Teague intercepts a Bobby Hoying pass and returns it eight yards to the Oakland 27. Four plays later, QB Quincy Carter scores on a 16-yard run to give the Cowboys a 7-3 lead with 9:40 left in the first half.

KEY DRIVE:
The Cowboys move 80 yards in nine plays for a touchdown to build a 14-3 lead with 2:36 remaining in the second quarter. Quincy Carter passes 14 yards to WR Kevin Drake on third-and-10 from the Dallas 20. Carter passes 26 yards to WR Damon Hodge and 29 yards to WR Jason Tucker on successive plays to the Oakland 3. Tony Hambrick then scores on a 3-yard run.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • 2: Victories by the Cowboys in their last 19 exhibition games since 1998.
  • 6: Consecutive quarters Oakland has gone without scoring a touchdown.
  • 7: Consecutive completions for QB Bobby Hoying in the first quarter.
  • 13.5: Scoring average by the Raiders for four 2001 exhibition games.

THEY SAID IT:
"I don't know what the cameras showed, but I know I had it. It would have been my first touchdown in the NFL, but I guess it wasn't meant to be."

Raiders WR Marcus Knight

"The defense came out with a lot of emotion, something we have been lacking. We kept that emotion up the whole half and didn't make mental mistakes."

Cowboys FS George Teague
