Cowboys 20, Raiders 6

FLASH RECAP:
Quarterback Quincy Carter and the Cowboys spoil the head-coaching debut of the Raiders' Bill Callahan at Texas Stadium on Aug. 9, 2002. The elusive Carter engineers scoring drives on Dallas' opening three possessions against Oakland's first- and second-unit defense. The Cowboys (1-0) score touchdowns on a 1-yard pass from Carter to Mike Lucky and a 2-yard run by Troy Hambrick. Oakland (0-1) commits an eye-opening 17 penalties for 107 yards, throws an interception, allows a blocked punt that leads to a Dallas field goal and fails to score a touchdown. The Raiders' Sebastian Janikowski hits field goals of 29 and 39 yards, but he also misses attempts from 47 and 52 yards.

PRIME-TIME PLAYERS:

Dallas
QB Quincy Carter -- Completes 10 of 13 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown during the first half. The second-year starter also has two scrambles for 24 yards rushing and eludes at least five sacks.
RB Troy Hambrick - Contributes a game-high 43 yards rushing on 10 first-half carries. His 2-yard touchdown run gives the Cowboys a 17-3 lead with 6:09 left in the second quarter.
WR Ken-Yon Rambo - Raiders 2001 seventh-round draft choice has an 18-yard catch on the Cowboys' first touchdown drive.
TE Mike Lucky - His 1-yard touchdown catch breaks a 3-3 deadlock early in the second quarter.

Oakland
CB Phillip Buchanon - Thwarts a Dallas scoring drive when he intercepts a Chad Hutchinson pass in the end zone in the third quarter. Buchanon, Oakland's top 2002 draft pick, also has a 31-yard punt in the second quarter negated by a holding penalty (he is credited with a 7-yard return).
QB Rich Gannon - Playing only one offensive series, he hits 4 of 6 passes for 52 yards to set up Sebastian Janikowski's 29-yard field goal.

QB Marquess Tuiasosopo - Completes 10 of 19 passes for 123 yards. He solidifies his position as Oakland's No. 2 quarterback by throwing no interceptions, directing one scoring drive and making good decisions on his reads.
WR Reggie Barlow - Contributes a 19-yard catch and rushes for 19 yards on a reverse on successive plays.

KEY STAT:
The Raiders have 17 penalties for 107 yards. FS Anthony Dorsett is called for a personal foul, giving Dallas a first-and-goal at the Oakland 1. On the next play, Quincy Carter throws a 1-yard pass to Mike Lucky for the Cowboys' first touchdown.

TURNING POINT:
The Cowboys score on their first three possessions to build a 17-3 advantage.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • 2: Missed field goals (from 47 and 52 yards) by Oakland's Sebastien Janikowski.
  • 8: Dallas receivers who catch first-half passes from Quincy Carter.
  • 27: Combined penalties by the Raiders (17) and Cowboys (10).

THEY SAID IT:
"We've got a long way to go. I look at our defense, the way we came out a little bit soft in the first quarter. Our special teams really need an upgrade. Offensively, we made some plays, but the penalties were drive-killers."

Raiders coach Bill Callahan

"It felt good to go out there and make plays when things break down. I got receivers who can make plays for me. My first priority is to get them the ball and let them do their thing."
