Raiders 13, Chiefs 10

FLASH RECAP:
Darren McFadden's 5-yard touchdown run with 1:07 remaining lifts visiting Oakland (1-1) to a stunning win over Kansas City (0-2) at Arrowhead Stadium before an announced crowd of 69,169 fans on Sept. 20, 2009.

After the Chiefs take a 10-6 lead on Dwayne Bowe's 29-yard touchdown catch with 2:28 remaining, the Raiders drive 69 yards in eight plays to pull out an improbable victory.

JaMarcus Russell is 4-of-7 passing for 67 yards to advance the ball from the Oakland 31-yard line to the Kansas City 5. The key play of the drive that takes 1:21 is a 28-yard Russell completion to wide receiver Todd Watkins to the Kansas City 14 on third-and 15.

Russell passes to McFadden for 9 yards before McFadden scores the game-winner on a 5-yard run after taking a pitchout from Russell on a misdirection play off the left side of the Oakland line.

The Raiders are victorious despite the Chiefs' statistical dominance. Oakland is outgained 409-166 in total yards and has the ball for only 21:21. At halftime, the Raiders have only four first downs and 61 net total yards. They finish with 11 first downs compared to 25 for Kansas City.

"From the first quarter all the way to the fourth quarter it was a struggle for us, until the last 2 or 3 minutes left in the game," McFadden tells reporters after Oakland wins in Kansas City for the third straight season. "It's probably one of the strangest wins.

"But a win is a win."

The Chiefs self-destruct with nine penalties for 70 yards and two second-half interceptions by Raiders free safety Michael Huff.

Poor clock management costs the Chiefs a chance at a go-ahead field goal late in the first half.

Oakland's Nnamdi Asomugha tackles Kansas City's Dantrell Savage after a 1-yard catch with about 10 seconds remaining in the second quarter. With the Chiefs out of timeouts, time expires before Kansas City can attempt a field goal as the first half ends in a 3-all tie.

McFadden and Michael Bush each have 35 rushing yards on a combined 21 carries after combining for 254 rushing yards on 37 attempts in Oakland's 2008 win at Arrowhead.

PRIME-TIME PLAYERS:

Oakland
FS Michael Huff - Contributes two second-half interceptions and breaks up a fourth-and-four pass on the Chiefs' final drive with 32 seconds left. Huff's first interception sets up a Sebastian Janikowski 54-yard field goal and the second interception stops a Chiefs drive at the Raiders' 8-yard line.

K Sebastian Janikowski - Is 2-for-2 on field goals (48 and 54 yards) and his four kickoffs are touchbacks.

P Shane Lechler - Averages 56.9 yards (45.9 net average) on seven punts. Lechler's punts (including a 70-yarder) keep the Chiefs out of good field position when starting drives. K.C.'s average drive start is the 24-yard line.

Kansas City
WR Dwayne Bowe - Beats Stanford Routt like a drum on a 29-yard TD catch late in the fourth quarter. Bowe finishes with five catches for 56 yards.

QB Matt Cassel - Is 24-of-39 passing for 241 yards and a touchdown, but his two interceptions stop drives.

RB Larry Johnson - Has 78 (on 24 carries) of the Chiefs' 173 rushing yards.

KEY STATS:
Before completing 4 of 7 passes for 67 yards on the game-winning drive, JaMarcus Russell is 3-of-17 passing for 42 yards on Oakland's opening nine drives. Through three quarters, Russell has only 35 passing yards and Oakland 77 total yards compared to 313 for Kansas City.

The Chiefs score only 10 points despite gaining 409 total yards, control the ball for a whopping 38:39 and run 79 plays compared to 51 for the Raiders.

THEY SAID IT:
"I know that I'm the guy. I stayed on an even keel. I knew we left plays out there on previous drives. On those three-and-outs, it was something they were doing, and something we're doing to ourselves as well. The best I can do from that is go on the sidelines, chart things up and take it from there. I'm never worried about a coach taking me out. That's not what I'm here for."

Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell

"When you have nine penalties, two turnovers and a couple other lapses, you're not going to win most of the time."

Chiefs coach Todd Haley

"It's as poor as I think you can play offensively and still find a way at the end there to win a football game."

Raiders coach Tom Cable
