Chargers 27, Raiders 14

FLASH RECAP:
LaDainian Tomlinson rushes for 140 yards and accounts for three touchdowns to lead visiting San Diego (3-3) to a victory over Oakland (1-4) before an announced crowd of 52,666 fans at McAfee Coliseum on Oct. 16, 2005.

Tomlinson becomes only the seventh player in NFL history to run for a touchdown (7 yards), throw for a touchdown (4 yards) and catch a touchdown pass (35 yards) in the same game.

LaMont Jordan scores touchdowns on runs of 4 and 1 yards for the Raiders, who lose their fourth straight to the Chargers.

Oakland’s Kerry Collins has 292 passing yards, but he doesn’t throw for a touchdown and suffers his first interception of the season.

The Raiders self-destruct with missed tackles, dropped passes and critical penalties. Two of Oakland's eight penalties keep alive two San Diego touchdown drives.

Raiders’ star wide receiver Randy Moss doesn’t play most of the final three quarters after reportedly sustaining bruised ribs, a strained groin and a bruised pelvic area. Moss is injured after he leaps to catch a long pass late in the first quarter. Moss lands hard on the turf and is kneed by a Chargers defender.

Tomlinson joins New England’s David Patten (2001) and Hall of Famer Walter Payton (1979) as the only players since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 merger to accomplish the run-pass-catch TD trifecta.

PRIME-TIME PLAYERS:

San Diego
RB LaDainian Tomlinson — Has 140 of the Chargers’ 190 rushing yards and has a hand in all three of his team’s touchdowns. Tomlinson’s 4-yard TD pass to tight end Justin Peelle puts Oakland in a 24-7 hole with 2:39 left in the second quarter.
Coach Marty Schottenheimer — Has made a career out of beating the Raiders. He notches his fourth straight win over Oakland and improves to 24-7 all-time against the Raiders.
QB Drew Brees — Is 11-of-14 passing for 127 yards and one TD in the first half.
DE Igor Olshansky — Has two of his team’s four sacks on Kerry Collins.
RB Michael Turner — When Tomlinson takes a breather, Turner rushes for 50 yards, 11 more rushing yards than the Raiders’ output.

Oakland
RB LaMont Jordan — Scores two TDs on short runs and has a game-high 6 catches for 58 yards. Jordan is held to 36 rushing yards on 12 carries, his second lowest output of the season.
DE Derrick Burgess — Has two sacks for the second straight game.
S Jarrod Cooper — His riveting hit on punt returner Eric Parker (which causes a fumble that San Diego recovers) in the first quarter is one of the few times the Coliseum crowd has something to cheer about.
SS Derrick Gibson — Helps hold Chargers TE Antonio Gates to two catches for 17 yards.

KEY STAT:
The Chargers average 4.6 yards on 41 running plays. The Raiders enter the game allowing a respectable 3.4 yards per rush.

GOAT:
Raiders coach Norv Turner. Coming off their bye week, the Raiders are outplayed and outcoached from the game’s start. Turner has two weeks to prepare for the Chargers, but his game plan is predictable and his players typically self-destruct with myriad mistakes.

TURNING POINT:
San Diego scores 10 points on consecutive possessions in the second quarter to build a 24-7 lead. The Chargers control the football for 12:13 of the second quarter.

BY THE NUMBERS:
4-14: Kerry Collins’ win-loss record as Raiders’ starting quarterback.
11: Raiders losses in their past 12 games against AFC West opposition. 11: LaDainian Tomlinson touchdowns this season, one more than the entire Oakland team.
24-7: Marty Schottenheimer’s win-loss record against the Raiders.

THEY SAID IT:
"We started out the game pretty slow. It seemed like we were in disarray at times and there was no reason for it because we weren’t seeing anything we didn’t see on film. It’s disappointing."

Raiders CB Charles Woodson

"I always take pride in throwing a touchdown because as a running back it's not something you're supposed to do."

Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson

DID YOU KNOW?:
LaDainian Tomlinson’s first of two touchdowns against the Raiders increases his streak of consecutive games with at least one touchdown to 18, equaling Lenny Moore’s NFL record. Moore accomplished the feat in 1963-65. Tomlinson’s second touchdown against Oakland, a 7-yard run, increases his NFL record of 18 games with a rushing TD.

Tomlinson is 4-for-5 with three TD passes in his NFL career, including two against the Raiders.
