Raiders 23, 49ers 7

FLASH RECAP:
Oakland's defense holds San Francisco to 209 total yards and forces two interceptions as the Raiders beat the 49ers before an announced crowd of 47,849 at McAfee Coliseum on Aug. 20, 2006.

Aaron Brooks throws an 8-yard touchdown pass to Doug Gabriel and Sebastian Janikowski kicks a 23-yard field goal to give Oakland (3-0) a 10-0 lead in the first half.

The Raiders increase the advantage to 23-0 on a 3-yard TD run by Justin Fargas and field goals from David Kimball (23 yards) and Tim Duncan (45 yards) during the second half.

The 49ers (1-1) avoid the shutout when Trent Dilfer throws a 6-yard TD pass to Michael Robinson with 3:42 remaining.

The exhibition game marks the return of Hall of Fame offensive tackle Art Shell on the Raiders sideline in Oakland for the first time since Aug. 26, 1989. On that night, Shell was an assistant coach on a Los Angeles Raiders team that lost to the Houston Oilers in an exhibition in Oakland.

Shell, who began his second tour of duty as Raiders coach in February 2006, coached games in Oakland as an assistant coach with the Kansas City Chiefs (1995 & 1996) and the Atlanta Falcons (2000). He played his last game in Oakland in December 1981.

THEY SAID IT:
"We took a really good step today. The offense moved the ball. We played nice tight defense and created turnovers. ... This is the NFL, my friend. Whenever you can do that, you're playing good football."

Raiders DT Warren Sapp

"A very flat performance from our football team. It started that way in our warmups, and I thought we were flat the entire game. We missed tackles, we missed opportunities for turnovers, and much the same offensively. I was not pleased with the tempo."

49ers coach Mike Nolan

DID YOU KNOW?:
The last time the Raiders opened an exhibition season with three victories was in 1976. Oakland went on to a 16-1 record (13-1 regular season, 3-0 playoffs), capped by a 32-14 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl XI.

With the win, the Raiders are 16-18 against the 49ers in their exhibition series, which started in 1967. Oakland is 6-4 against San Francisco in regular-season games.
