FLASH RECAP:
San Francisco (1-1) spoils the return of Jerry Rice to 3Com Park on Aug. 19, 2001. Terrell Owens (38-yard catch) and Jonas Lewis (8-yard run) contribute touchdowns to help the 49ers overcome the Raiders (2-1). Rice, who played 16 seasons in San Francisco, signed as a free agent with Oakland in June. The future Hall of Fame receiver has one catch for 23 yards against his former team. Jose Cortez kicks field goals of 26 and 37 yards for the 49ers. For the Raiders (2-1), Mondriel Fulcher catches 7- and 2-yard scoring passes and Sebastain Janikowski kicks a 30-yard field goal.
PRIME-TIME PLAYERS:
San Francisco
WR Terrell Owens -- Makes a spectacular over-the-shoulder catch of a Jeff Garcia pass for the game's first touchdown.
RB Jonas Lewis -- Erases a 17-13 San Francisco deficit with an 8-yard touchdown run 1:49 into the fourth quarter. Finishes with a game-high 61 yards rushing on 10 carries.
FS Zack Bronson -- Stops Oakland's first possession when he intercepts a Rich Gannon pass in the end zone and returns it 51 yards. Two plays later, Jeff Garcia throws a touchdown pass to Terrell Owens.
KR Saladin McCullough -- Former Raider (2000 training camp) returns a kickoffs 57 yards to the Oakland 30 to set up a field goal of 26-yards by Cortez.
ILB Quincy Stewart -- Forces a fumble by RB Jabari Jackson on Oakland's final possession with 1:53 remaining. After Jackson catches a 5-yard pass, he coughs up the football when tackled by Stewart.
Oakland
TE Mondriel Fulcher -- Has touchdown catches of 7 and 2 yards in the second quarter as Oakland takes a 14-10 advantage.
P Shane Lechler -- Averages 47.3 yards on three punts. He puts two kicks inside the 20 and booms a 56-yarder in near-blizzard conditions (the temperature at kickoff was 62 degrees with a 20 mph wind).
SS Marquez Pope -- Has one of Oakland's two sacks with a riveting hit on the 49ers' Jeff Garcia for a 5-yard loss at the San Francisco 1.
WR Jerry Porter-- Makes three catches for 58 yards. Suffers a separated right shoulder after a 24-yard reception in the second quarter.
TURNING POINT:
With Oakland leading 17-13, Sebastian Janikowski is wide right on a 44-yard field goal attempt with 2:46 left in the third quarter. Taking over at its 34, San Francisco marches for the winning touchdown.
KEY DRIVE:
The 49ers move 66 yards in 8 plays to score a touchdown for a 20-17 advantage. Jonas Lewis completes the 4 1/2 minute-drive with an 8-yard run on the fourth play of the final quarter. FB Jasen Isom runs for two yards on fourth-and-one from the San Francisco 43. QB Tim Rattay passes 27 yards to Isom on second-and-1 from the Oakland 35. Rattay is 3-for-3 passing for 51 yards on the drive.
BY THE NUMBERS:
2: Touchdown catches by Oakland TE Mondriel Fulcher.
3: Turnovers by the Raiders. QBs Rich Gannon and Marques Tuiasosopo each throw an interception and RB Jabari Jackson loses a fumble.
