Raiders 43, Cardinals 7

FLASH RECAP:
Michael Husted kicks five field goal and Tyronne Wheatley scores two touchdowns as the Raiders overwhelm the Cardinals 43-7 at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.

PRIME-TIME PLAYERS:

  • PK Michael Husted -- Kicks field goals of 43, 52, 43, 53 and 21 yards. He finishes the preseason by making eight straight field goals.
  • MLB Eric Barton -- The fifth-round draft choice from Maryland is a human highlight film in the third quarter with two interceptions and his first NFL touchdown on a 35-yard fumble return.
  • RB Tyronne Wheatley -- Scores touchdowns on runs of 26 and 5 yards. He also has a game-high 75 yards rushing on 8 carries.
  • CB Eric Allen -- He returns an intercepted pass 40 yards to the Arizona 40, setting up Oakland's first touchdown. It was Allen's first interception since he suffered a season-ending knee injury last Nov. 15.
  • QB Bobby Hoying -- He completes 8 of 12 passes for 62 yards with no interceptions. The former Eagle also rushes for 16 yards on 2 attempts.

TURNING POINT:
MLB Eric Barton makes two interceptions and returns a fumble 35 yards for a touchdown as Oakland outscores Arizona 17-0 during the third quarter.

KEY STAT:
The Raiders outgain the Cardinals 96-7 in the first quarter.

THEY SAID IT:
"I haven't scored since high school and I've never had two picks. This might be one of my best games ever."

DID YOU KNOW:
The Raiders complete the 1999 preseason with a 3-1 record. It's Oakland's best showing since going 3-1 in 1995.



49ers 16, Raiders 8
August 30, at Oakland


FLASH RECAP:
Reserve wide receivers Damon Griffin and Na'il Benjamin each catch a touchown pass in the second half as the 49ers rally to beat the Raiders 16-8 before an announced crowd of 61,901 at Network Associates Coliseum.

PRIME-TIME PLAYERS:

  • WR Damon Griffin -- Turns a short completion into a 55-yard touchdown pass from Jim Druckenmiller to give San Francisco a 9-5 lead with 5:01 left in the third quarter. Griffin catches the 6-yard pass over the middle and then blots through the Oakland defense for the go-ahead score.
  • WR Na'il Benjamin -- Clinches the San Francisco victory by catching a 13-yard touchdown pass from Jeff Garcia with 2:36 remaining. Benjamin also makes a 21-yard reception on 3rd-and-10 to keep the 48-yard drive alive.
  • DT Darrell Russell -- He has a sack and forces a safety (when Steve Young is called for illegal grounding in the end zone) on successive plays in the first quarter.
  • QB Bobby Hoying -- The former Eagle makes his debut with the Raiders by completing 8 of 18 passes for 135 and suffering two interceptions. He joined Oakland on Aug. 24 in a trade with Philadelphia.
  • DT Chuck Osborne -- He sacks Druckenmiller and also tackles running back Lawrence Phillips for a 7-yard loss.

TURNING POINT:
Damon Griffin's 55-yard touchdown reception puts the 49ers ahead to stay with 5:01 left in the third quarter.

KEY STAT:
The 49ers' oft-criticized defense allows 62 yards rushing on 19 carries. In the previous two games, San Francisco surrendered 266 yards rushing.

THEY SAID IT:
"I've never seen a preseason game with this type of atmosphere. It was a great crowd."

DID YOU KNOW:
Starting quarterbacks Steve Young of the 49ers and the Raiders' Rich Gannon combine for six completions in 17 attempts for 98 yards and no touchdowns. Young is 3-of-9 for 57 yards and one interception and Gannon is 3-of-8 for 41 yards.



Raiders 10, Cowboys 3
August 15, at Oakland


FLASH RECAP:
Running back Tyrone Wheatley scores on a 1-yard run with 35 seconds remaining as the Raiders defeat the Cowboys 10-3 at Network Associates Coliseum. Three plays earlier, Oakland quarterback Scott Dreisbach suffers a broken right fibula when he is tackled from behind by Dallas defensive end Sam Simmons. Dreisbach, who played impresssively in the Raiders' first two preseason games, is expected to be sidelined from four to six weeks.

PRIME-TIME PLAYERS:

  • QB Scott Dreisbach -- He completes 8-of-12 passes for 111 yards with no interceptions. His 43-yard completion to wide receiver Kenny Shedd sets up Tyrone Wheatley's touchdown.
  • LB D.J. Williams -- Cut in training camp by Dallas a year ago, he has a game-high 8 tackles and 2.5 sacks against his former team.
  • RB Rashaan Salaam -- He leads the Raiders witth 61 yards rushing on 14 carries.
  • DT Chuck Osborne -- He makes two of Oakland's six sacks. On successive plays in the second quarter, Osborne pressures Dallas quarterback Mike Quinn into an incompletetion followed by a sack.
  • QB Troy Aikman -- He hits on 10 of 14 passses for 104 yards on the first two drives by the Cowboys.

TURNING POINT:
Saftey Marcus Ray intercepts Dallas quarterback Jason Garrett at the Oakland 23 with 5:10 remaining. The Raiders then drive 77 yards in 10 plays for the winning touchdown.

KEY STAT:
The teams combine for 19 penalties, 11 by the Cowboys.

THEY SAID IT:
"I had a first down. I'm young and I thought if I had another few yards I had a touchdown. I don't know why I didn't slide -- maybe things will change now."

Raiders 18, Rams 17
August 7, at St. Louis


FLASH RECAP:
The Raiders open their 1999 exhibition season with a come-from-behind 18-17 triumph over the St. Louis Rams at the Trans World Dome. Quarterback Rich Gannon completes 7-of-10 passes with one interception in his Oakland debut. Gannon signed a four-year, $16 million contract with the Raiders in February.

PRIME-TIME PLAYERS:

  • QB Scott Dreisbach -- The rookie from Michigan didn't perform like a fourth-stringer. He engineers two late touchdown drives to spark Oakland. Dreisbach throws a 6-yard touchdown pass on 4th-and-goal to TE Marcus Hinton with 1:38 left to complete the comeback from a 17-6 deficit.
  • QB Trent Green -- Completes 7-of-8 passes for 119 yards, including a 39-yard touchdown pass to rookie Torry Holt, as the Rams build a 10-0 lead in the first quarter.
  • LB K.D. Williams -- The Canadian Football League import contributes a fumble recovery and five tackles for Oakland.
  • RB Chad Levitt -- The former Raiders' draft choice has 43 yards rushing and one touchdown for the Rams.

TURNING POINT:
The Raiders narrow the deficit to 17-12 on a 14-yard touchdown run by Marlon Barnes with 5:37 left. One play earlier, Oakland LB Sam Sword forces a fumble when he makes a hit on St. Louis QB Joe Germaine.

KEY STAT:
Oakland forces three turnovers in the fourth quarter, including a fumble and interception by the Rams' Germaine.

THEY SAID IT:
"We don't care who we're playing, we don't care what we're playing for, we just want to win. We found a way to do it."
